Presidency of the Church in Europe, August–December 1843

When most of the returned to , Illinois, from their European mission in early 1841, remained in and was appointed the mission’s presiding authority, with and as his counselors. Pratt served in that capacity until shortly before his departure for Nauvoo in October 1842, when he announced that would be the new president of the church in Europe, with Snow and as his counselors. Ward and Clark continued to lead the church in Europe after Snow and a company of Saints set sail from England for in January 1843. In spring 1843, JS instructed the to send to “preside over the church in England” with Clark and Ward as counselors. Hedlock was set apart on 23 May 1843 but did not arrive in the British Isles until 30 September 1843.
