When most of
the returned to ,
Illinois, from their European mission in April 1841, remained in and was appointed the
mission’s presiding authority, with and as his counselors. Pratt served in
that capacity until shortly before his departure for Nauvoo in October
1842, when he announced that would be the new
president of the church in Europe, with Snow and
as his counselors. In January 1843, Snow and a
company of Saints set sail from for . Thomas Ward and Hiram Clark
continued to lead the church in Europe during the period covered by this
volume. However, in spring 1843, JS instructed the to send to “preside over the church in England” with
Hiram Clark and Thomas Ward to serve as counselors. Although Hedlock received the assignment and was
set apart on 23 May 1843, he did not arrive in the British Isles until
September 1843.
