After the disbanded, , a member of the in , Ohio, accused JS of misconduct while leading
the camp. After returning to Kirtland, JS dealt with these
accusations for much of August 1834.
Eventually Sylvester Smith recanted his charges in the Latter
Day Saints’ Messenger and Advocate. JS also spent time
in various councils, dealing with wayward members, counseling church
members on whether to migrate to , and discussing the
publication of what became the Doctrine
and Covenants. In fall 1834, he made a brief trip to with
and . In December
1834, JS appointed Cowdery, , and to the and oversaw the appointment of his
father to the office of . The twenty-two
documents in this part cover these events and include minutes of
meetings, correspondence, and documents from the Sylvester Smith
hearings.
