took notes on remarks JS made on the state of human spirits prior to mortal life on earth and God’s intention to embody these spirits to give them power over Satan. McIntire did not date this entry in his notebook but merely introduced the entry with the phrase “Next Meeting.” This section of McIntire’s notebook summarized meetings that appear to have occurred weekly. Because the book includes notes on meetings held in 1841 and the two prior entries cover meetings held on 5 January and likely on 12 January, the meeting reported here probably occurred on 19 January.

For further discussion of the dating of records in McIntire’s notebook, see Historical Introductions to Accounts of Meeting and Discourse, 5 Jan. 1841; and Account of Meeting, 12 Jan. 1841; and Source Note for Account of Meeting and Discourse, 5 Jan. 1841, as Reported by William P. McIntire. JS’s remarks built upon his earlier revelations and teachings on the premortal existence of humankind. (See Historical Introduction to Revelation, 6 May 1833 [D&C 93]; and Revelation, 6 May 1833 [D&C 93:29–32].)

The meeting was likely part of a weekly lyceum in which speakers addressed various secular and religious subjects that were then debated by participants.

It is unknown whether JS made his remarks as a featured speaker or in response to a presentation made by someone else. McIntire apparently made his notes in the meeting or shortly thereafter.

A grand council before the foundation of the earth is discussed in JS’s translation of papyri that he said contained writings of the Old Testament patriarch Abraham.
