KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, That we Joseph Smith Junr & of the county of —— and State of are held and firmly bound unto George Dykes of the county of —— and State of his heirs and assigns in the sum of Four hundred dollars for the payment of which well and truly to be made we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and adminstrators, firmly by these presents.
NOW THE CONDITION OF THE ABOVE OBLIGATION IS SUCH, that whereas, the said Joseph Smith Jun & have this day sold unto the said George Dykes—— a certain lot — of ground situated, lying and being in the county of —— and State of , and described on the plat of the Town of as being Lot No. one in Block No. one hundred & forty three 143 and received in payment for said lot Two—— notes of hand bearing even date herewith, for the sum of Two hundred—— dollars and payable as follows, and annual interest
The first for one hundred dollars payable the first day of July in the year— 1842—
The second for one hundred dollars payable the first day of July in the year 1846—
Making in all or both the aforesaid sum of two hundred dollars & interest—
with interest for each and every note to be paid annually. on the first day of July—
Now if the said George Dykes his— heirs, executors, and administrators shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid, the amount of said notes with such interest as may accrue thereon, according to the tenor and effect thereof, when due, we the said Joseph Smith Jun & bind ourselves our heirs, executors and administrators, to make or cause to be made, to the said George Dykes—— his heirs and assigns, a good and sufficient Deed for the above described lot Twenty years after the date hereof and then this Bond to become null and void, otherwise to be and remain in full force and virtue.
Given under our hands and seals this First—— day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine

The document is dated 1 July 1839, but this is a scribal error. Land was not being sold in Nauvoo until the fall of 1839, and the preprinted form Sherwood inscribed was in use from November 1839 through at least September 1840. It is likely that Sherwood mistook either the month or the year when he filled out the form.
