favor of being as expeditious as we can. If we go to it is only to answer our present purposes and to have a place of rest for a little season. The in , Missouri, has got to be built. It is impossible at present to affect an union amongst the union tribes, and we only want to get a place among them and have a privilege of preaching to them. As to resting, he never expects to rest untill this kingdom is established all over the world. You cant at present unite the Lamanites so that we can live in our midst, all that we can do is to go and sow a little seed, and we can reap and sow, untill we can come back and sweep and build the . In December 1848 Young met with several council members and suggested that Parley P. Pratt be sent to take charge of the missionary work in the Pacific and to establish missions in “the Sandwich Islands, Society Islands, New Zealand, Australia & China.” Young stated that he wanted Pratt to “teach them the principles of industry as well as the gospel, and prepare them for coming here [Salt Lake City] a few years hence.” (Minutes, 5 Dec. 1848, Council of Fifty, Papers, 1844–1885, CHL.)
