Latter-day Saints believed that the temple ceremonies introduced by JS would make it possible for individuals to one day become, in the words of John the Revelator, “unto our God kings and priests.” In February 1844 JS told the group of men assigned on a mission to the West, “I want every man that goes to be a King and pri[e]st. when he gets on the mountain he may wa[n]t to talk with his god.” (Revelation 5:10; JS, Journal, 23 Feb. 1844; see also High Priests Quorum Record, 2 Mar. 1845; and Heber C. Kimball, Sermon, 20 July 1845, Record of Seventies, bk. B, 20 July 1845.)
