JS here critiqued the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, which an influential nineteenth-century Protestant theological dictionary defined as “the union of three in one; generally applied to the ineffable mystery of three persons in one God,—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” (“Trinity,” in Buck, Theological Dictionary, 577.)

Rejecting the concept of a triune God, JS taught that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost were three distinct personages. In February 1841, JS explained, “Concerning the God-head it was Not as many imagined— three Heads & but one body; . . . the three were separate bodys, God the first & Jesus the Mediator the 2d & the Holy Ghost & these three agree in one.” (Discourse, ca. 16 Feb. 1841; see also Instruction, 2 Apr. 1843 [D&C 130].)
