Small notebook measuring 6½ × 4¼ × ⅛ inches (17 × 11 × 0.3 cm) and containing sixteen leaves. Entries in the notebook were written in ink and graphite. labeled the notebook “Scriptural Items” on the front cover.
first used the notebook to record scriptural notes. In 1841 he labeled the verso of the fourth leaf “Words of the Prophets 1841” and thereafter began recording notes or summaries of discourses by JS and other church leaders. These sermon notes compose most of the volume. The entries are not arranged chronologically, but most date from 1843. The last dated sermon was given 10 March 1844.
The notebook may have entered the Church Historian’s Office (now CHL) in 1845, when began working in the office. In winter 1845–1846, his uncle copied part of a sermon recorded in the notebook into JS’s history. , who served as clerk to the church historian and recorder from 1845 to 1865, docketed that leaf: “1841 | Words of the Prophets”. These facts suggest continuous institutional custody.
