when the above letter was presented the — he remarked in presence of & others that “he was satisfied there was no excitment any where but in amongst the mormons themselves. All was quiet & no apprehensions of trouble in any other place so far as he was able to ascertain” He afterwards stated while conversing on another subject that, “persons were offering their services every day, eithr in person or by letter & held themselves in readiness to go agaist the mormons whenever he should call upon them.

staid in evening & night previous to the day refered to by called at his house, said Mrs Carlin, & watched the house for the during the A.M. of the day referred to. P.M. saw enter his house, & followed him, but fo[u]nd only the s daughter who said her was up stairs — Mrs Carlin soon come in & said her was gone; but said M your daughter says he is up stairs Says Mrs Carlin, he did return but is gone again. Why did the — seek so diligitly to keep out of s way? & then make such statemets?
