A December 1833 revelation stated that the Lord had allowed church members to be expelled from Jackson County because “there were jar[r]ings and contentions envyings and strifes and lustful and covetous desires” among them. It also said that because church members were “slow to hearken unto the voice of the Lord their God,” God was “slow to hearken unto their prayers to answer them in the day of their trouble.” (Revelation, 16–17 Dec. 1833 [D&C 101:6–7].)
