Jedediah Grant was appointed to preside over the church in Philadelphia in an April 1843 church conference. He returned from Philadelphia to Nauvoo in April 1844 and apparently brought tithing and donations from the members with him. (See JS, Journal, 7 Apr. 1843; and JS History, vol.
