Footnotes
This six-leaf gathering was either a binding error or the result of one sheet coming loose from the binding before the book was inscribed, as the book’s inscription and pagination runs through this gathering without skipping any text or page numbers.
The journal entries are inscribed on pages 26, 31, 33, 36, 39, 43, 44, 48, 56–61, 66–67, 88–95, 122–135, and 164–215.

Joseph Fielding sailed from England to New Orleans in November 1841 and carried tithing from the British Saints, which he was given by Parley P. Pratt. Fielding and the group of around two hundred English Saints traveling with him were instructed to “tarry” at Warsaw, Illinois. Fielding eventually moved from Warsaw to Nauvoo and agreed to work land owned by his brother-in-law, Hyrum Smith. He moved into a log cabin near this land in April 1842. (See JS, Journal, 13 Dec. 1841; Letter from Parley P. Pratt, 24 Oct. 1841; and Fielding, Journal, Dec. 1843–Mar. 1859, 1–4, 9–10.)

Benjamin Hulse was a church member living in Long Island, New York. He appears to have moved from New York to Illinois in May 1842 and may have brought New York members’ tithing and donations with him.
