Single leaf measuring 13 × 8½ inches (33 × 22 cm). The document was folded in half twice horizontally for carrying and filing. There is residue of a red wafer near the top of the verso, where the copy of the warrant was attached to the 12 June 1844 petition.
A docket and filing notation were added on 12 June 1844 by municipal court clerk , who served in that capacity from 1843 until the city was disincorporated in 1845. This document was presumably kept among city records until the city was disincorporated. Many if not most of the city records were likely included in the various collections of city records listed in an inventory produced by the Church Historian’s Office (later Church Historical Department) in 1846, when they were packed up along with church records and taken to the Salt Lake Valley. One of constable ’s returns on the warrant was copied into JS’s history in 1856. The city records are also listed in inventories of church records created in 1855, 1878, and circa 1904. By 1973 the document had been included in the JS Collection at the Church Historical Department (now CHL). The document’s presumed inclusion with Nauvoo city records listed in early church inventories, its partial incorporation into JS’s history, and its later inclusion in the JS Collection indicate continuous church custody since 1845.
