Biography
10 Aug. 1795–19 June 1869. Farmer, wheelwright, jailer, gunsmith, surveyor. Born at Bourbon Co., Kentucky. Son of Ralph Petty and Isabelle McClure. Moved to Barren Co., Kentucky, 1802. Moved to Paris, Henry Co., Tennessee, by Mar. 1824. Married first Catherine Petty (no relation), 2 June 1829, at Henry Co. Moved to Graves Co., Kentucky, by Mar. 1833. Moved to Benton Co., Tennessee, by 1835. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1835, at Benton Co. Moved to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, Sept. 1836. Justice of the peace in Far West, Sept. 1838. Exiled from Far West and located at Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Served missions to Tennessee, 1839, ca.1843. Ordained a high priest by George Miller and William Felsham, 8 Oct. 1844, in Nauvoo. Arrived in Salt Lake Valley, 24 Sept. 1848. Helped establish Manti, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Sanpete Co., Utah Territory), 1849. Elected Sanpete Co. judge, Apr. 1851. Elected to Utah Territorial Legislature, 1852. Married second Lucinda Haggerty, 5 June 1853, in Salt Lake City. In fall 1862, was a founder of Springdale, Washington Co., Utah Territory, where he died.
