8 Jan. 1813–7 Sept. 1877. Circus actor, farmer, merchant, stonemason, surgeon, steamboat captain, editor, land developer, surveyor, politician. Born in Ohio. Moved to Burlington, Des Moines Co., Michigan Territory (later in Iowa), by 1836. Married first Sarah Hoffman, 7 Nov. 1836, in Montgomery Co., Illinois. Moved to Fort Madison, Lee Co., Iowa Territory, by June 1839. Appointed superintendent of state prison, 5 June 1839, in Fort Madison. Moved to Monroe Co., Missouri, by 1850. Married second Rebecca, by 1860. Moved to Prairie, Audrain Co., Missouri, by 1860. Elected sheriff of Audrain Co., 1860, 1862. Established Audrain County Beacon, ca. Jan. 1863. Laid out town of Laddonia, Audrain Co., 1870/1871. Moved to Mexico, Audrain Co. Served as mayor of Mexico for two terms. Married third Ellen Hillier, 14 Aug. 1877, in Vandalia, Audrain Co. Died in Mexico.
