Biography

1791–19 Feb. 1879. Attorney, newspaper owner. Born in Connecticut. Moved to Vergennes, Addison Co., Vermont. Moved to Painesville, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1821. Admitted to Ohio bar, 4 Mar. 1823. Practiced law in Geauga Co., 1823–1839, and in Lake Co., 1840–1847. Served as trustee of Painesville Academy, 1823. Married Marilla, 25 July 1824, at Painesville. Became joint proprietor of Painesville Telegraph with E. D. Howe, May 1828. Strong opponent of slavery. Member of 1834 committee of Ohio citizens that investigated origin of Book of Mormon and concluded it to be fiction. Served as counsel for prosecution in State of Ohio v. JS for Threatening to Take Life. Attorney for Matthew Allen in M. Allen v. O. Granger. Attorney for Cyrus Smalling in JS for the use of J. Granger v. Smalling and Coltrin. Moved to Milwaukee, ca. 1847, and practiced law. Died at Milwaukee.
