Young, John
Biography
May 1811–30 Oct. 1886. Lumber and sawmill worker, clerk, farmer. Born in Jackson Co., Tennessee. Son of David Young and Elizabeth Vance. Possibly baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John D. Lee at same time as his parents and siblings, Apr. 1842. Helped procure lumber from pineries on Black River, Wisconsin Territory, for Nauvoo temple and Nauvoo House. Part of committe that petitioned JS to move Black River Falls branch to Texas, Feb. 1844. Left Wisconsin Territory with Lyman Wight’s colony to settle in Texas, 28 Mar. 1845. Married Priscilla Hawley, 4 July 1846, at Austin, Travis Co., Texas. Elected county clerk of Gillespie Co., Texas, June 1848. Left Wight’s colony and moved to Indian Territory (later in Oklahoma), 1854. Moved to Shelby Co., Iowa, by 1860. Baptized into Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1884. Died in Gallands Grove, Shelby Co.
