Biography
14 Nov. 1788–16 Aug. 1858. Farmer. Born in Vergennes, Addison Co., Vermont. Son of Gideon Hawley and Lavinia Darrough. Moved to Ferrisburg, Addison Co., by 1790. Married first, ca. 1812. Served in War of 1812. Moved to White Co., Illinois, ca. 1818. Married second Sarah Schroeder (Srader), 4 July 1822, in Lawrence Co., Illinois. Moved to Peoria, Putnam Co., Illinois, between 1825 and 1830. Served as Methodist missionary to Indians. Served in Black Hawk War, 1832. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, winter 1833–1834. Moved to Sangamon Co., Illinois, 1835; to Caldwell Co., Missouri, Sept. 1837; to Ray Co., Missouri, ca. 1838; back to Caldwell Co., 24 Oct. 1838; and to near Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, 1839. Ordained a seventy, 12 May 1839. Moved to Hawley’s Grove (later Ambrosia), Lee Co., Iowa Territory, by 11 July 1839. Moved to Zarahemla, Lee Co., by 18 Oct. 1841. Left with family to help procure lumber from pineries on Black River, Wisconsin Territory, 21 July 1843. Member of bishopric at Black River Falls, Crawford Co., Wisconsin Territory, by Sept. 1843. Ordained a high priest, 24 Sept. 1843. Member of committee that petitioned JS to move Black River Falls branch to Republic of Texas, Feb. 1844. Left Wisconsin Territory with Lyman Wight’s colony to settle in Texas, 28 Mar. 1845. Spent winter in Fort Johnson, Grayson Co., Texas, 16 Nov. 1845–24 Apr. 1846. Settled at Webber’s Prairie (later Webberville), Travis Co., Texas, 6 June 1846. Moved to Zodiac, Bexar Co., Texas, ca. June 1847. Ordained a patriarch by Lyman Wight, 1847, in Texas. Moved to Indian Territory (later in Oklahoma), 1853, where he died.
