Biography
10 Aug. 1802–30 June 1870. Newspaper owner and editor, printer, tax collector, politician, postmaster, insurance agent. Born in Palmyra, Ontario Co., New York. Son of Jeduthan Tucker and Abi Brown. Worked in office of Ontario Messenger, in Canandaigua, Ontario Co. Purchased Western Farmer and Canal Advocate with E. B. Grandin, 1823, and changed newspaper’s name to Wayne Sentinel, which he continued to edit for almost forty years. Married Lucy Rogers, 8 Dec. 1824, in Palmyra. Assisted in publishing first edition of Book of Mormon, 1830, in Palmyra. Elected to New York Assembly representing Wayne Co., New York, 1837. Served as postmaster of Palmyra, Feb. 1839–Mar. 1841. Elected village president, 1840, in Palmyra. Served as Palmyra town supervisor, 1845, 1851, and 1852. Editorial writer for Rochester Union and Advertiser. Published antagonistic book Origin, Rise, and Progress of Mormonism, 1867. Worked as insurance agent, 1867–1870. Died in Palmyra.
