31 Oct. 1796–23 Apr. 1861. Teacher, minister/preacher, editor/publisher, author. Born in Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Son of John Scott and Mary Innes. Raised Calvinist. Studied music at University of Edinburgh, in Scotland. Immigrated to U.S., ca. 1818, and worked as tutor of Latin in Jamaica, Queens Co., New York. Moved to Pittsburgh, 1819. Adopted restorationist ideas from George Forrester and was baptized, ca. 1819–1820. Met Alexander Campbell, winter 1821–1822. Began writing and publishing articles in Campbell’s periodical Christian Baptist, 1823. Married first Sarah Whitsett, 3 Jan. 1823. Moved to Steubenville, Jefferson Co., Ohio, 1826. Invited by Alexander Campbell to become evangelist for Mahoning Baptist Association, 1827, in Canfield, Trumbull Co., Ohio. Resided in Canfield, in 1830. Moved to Cincinnati, by 1832. Published Christian Evangelist, 1832–1835, 1838–1844, in Cincinnati. Served as trustee for Miami University by Ohio legislature, 1834–1837. Resided at Millcreek, Hamilton Co., Ohio, 1840. In 1844, returned to Pittsburgh, where he was pastor of two congregations. Published Protestant Unionist, 1844–1850, in Pittsburgh. Wife died, 1849. Moved to Mason Co., Kentucky, by 1850. Married second Nancy B. Allen, ca. 13 Aug. 1850, in Mason Co. Principal of female academy, early 1850s, in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky. Wife died, 1854. Married third Eliza A. Sandidge, ca. 23 Aug. 1855, in Mason Co. Resided at May’s Lick, Mason Co., 1860. Died in May’s Lick.
