Jessup, William

21 June 1797–11 Sept. 1868. Teacher, lawyer, judge. Born in Southampton, Long Island, Suffolk Co., New York. Son of Zebulon Jessup and Zervia Huntting. Graduated from Yale College in New Haven, New Haven Co., Connecticut, 1815. Moved to Montrose, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania, 1818. Admitted to the bar, Feb. 1820. Married Amanda Harris, 4 July 1820. Colonel in 126th Volunteer Regiment, 1824. Served as register and recorder of Susquehanna Co., Jan. 1824–1833. Joined Montrose Presbyterian Church, 3 Sept. 1826, and made a ruling elder, 2 Aug. 1829. Appointed Sabbath School superintendent, 1829. Appointed commissioner representing Susquehanna Co., at general assemblies of Presbyterian church, 1831–1833. Served on board of directors of first free school in Susquehanna Co., 1834. Appointed President Judge of Eleventh District, 1838, in Pennsylvania. President of first board of trustees for new academy in Susquehanna Co., 1846. President of Lackawanna Railroad Company, 1853–1857. Served on board of trustees of Farmer’s High School of Pennsylvania (later Pennsylvania State University), 1855. Died in Montrose.
