Incorporation process begun, 10 May 1831. Expanded charter granted, 1839. Population by 1837 about 1,200. JS and traveling party stayed in town, 27 Dec. 1842, en route to JS’s hearing in Springfield, Illinois, and 8 Jan. 1843, on return trip to Nauvoo, Illinois.
