J. F. Scribner

Summary

A firm operated by merchant Jonathan F. Scribner in Buffalo, New York, from 1836 to 1837, selling hardware, cutlery, tools, and glass. The Kirtland firms of Cahoon, Carter & Co. and Rigdon, Smith & Cowdery purchased goods from Jonathan F. Scribner on credit in June 1836 and some additional materials in fall 1836. In 1837, Scribner closed his store and moved to Troy, New York. Brigham Young and Willard Richards visited Scribner in Troy to renegotiate the outstanding promissory notes owed him. Oliver Granger was designated a financial agent by JS and Sidney Rigdon in September 1837 to meet with Scribner and attempt to settle both firms’ debts. Despite renegotiations, Scribner brought lawsuits against both firms in October 1837. The lawsuits were continued into the 1840s, and JS, unsure whether the debts remained unresolved, included them in his bankruptcy application.
