John A. Newbould
Summary
A wholesale firm run by merchant John A. Newbould in Buffalo, New York, from 1835 to 1839, selling hardware, tools, cutlery, and other household goods. In 1840, Frederick W. Newbould became a partner and a new firm was formed. The Kirtland firms of Cahoon, Carter & Co. and Rigdon, Smith & Cowdery purchased goods from John A. Newbould on credit in June 1836. In April 1837, Newbould began lawsuits against both firms to secure payment of their unpaid promissory notes. In September 1837, the debt was consolidated and renegotiated. Agent Oliver Granger tried to renegotiate the debt again in August 1839, but it remained unresolved, and JS included the consolidated debt in his bankruptcy application.
