these men, they had no hope to procure a conviction in this case. This has been tried merely of for the purpose of rallying their scattered forces—
Let your verdict in this case show you worth<y> of of free men, and let it publish to the world that you sustain the liberty of free men, And will permit them to complain of their grievances If you believe that these defandants are not as clear of the murder of the Smiths as all the rest of the people of the hang them— if you do hang them it will be for not participating in this matter for all the evidence ex[ce]pt the 3 mormons show they had nothing to do with it.
