Biography

23 Sept. 1814–27 Nov. 1903. Newspaper editor and proprietor, tinner, hardware merchant, politician. Born in Sempronius, Cayuga Co., New York. Son of Daniel Chandler and Deborah Parker. Moved with family to Wayne Co., New York. Worked in office of Wayne Sentinel as bookbinder’s apprentice on first edition of Book of Mormon, 1829–1830, in Palmyra, Wayne Co. Moved to White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., Michigan Territory, spring 1835. Worked in office of Michigan Statesman, spring 1835–fall 1835. Moved office to Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan Territory, and started Kalamazoo Gazette under firm Gilbert & Chandler. Elected clerk of first Michigan Territory legislature, 1836. Married Eliza Francis Abbott, 15 Feb. 1838, in Detroit. Moved to Constantine, St. Joseph Co., by Mar. 1838. Elected clerk of Michigan House of Representatives, ca. 1838. Moved to Coldwater, Branch Co., Michigan, 1839. Elected school inspector, 1840 and 1848, and town assessor, 1841, in Coldwater. Published Coldwater Sentinel, 1841–ca. 1848. Joined Methodist church, 1847. Established and operated Chandler Hardware Company with Lester F. Hale, 1848–ca. 1869. Elected first mayor of Coldwater, 1861; served three terms. Began wholesale carriage and saddler trade, ca. 1870. Master of Lodge of the Sons of Temperance. Died in Coldwater.
