Biography
10 Nov. 1816–16 Feb. 1892. Lawyer, newspaper editor, commission merchant, real estate agent, collector. Born in Gilead, Oxford Co., Maine. Son of Jason Sherman and Mary (Polly) Stow. Moved to Guildhall, Essex Co., Vermont, by June 1830. Attended University of Vermont in Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont, 1832–1834. Moved to Reading, Berks Co., Pennsylvania, where he was admitted to bar, 7 Aug. 1839. Moved to Carthage, Hancock Co., Illinois, by June 1844. Married Rebecca S. Kendall, 18 Aug. 1847, in Phillipston, Worchester Co., Massachusetts. Moved to Galesburg, Knox Co., Illinois, by Aug. 1856, where he purchased Galesburg Free Democrat. Elected Galesburg First Ward alderman, 6 Apr. 1857. Moved to Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey, by 1876. Possibly returned to Galesburg, after 1881. Buried in Galesburg.
