Biography
1 Apr. 1781–7 Feb. 1853. Surveyor, store owner, justice of the peace, military officer, politician. Born in Shepherdstown, Berkley Co., Virginia (later in Jefferson Co., West Virginia). Son of William Lucas and Susannah Barnes. Moved to Scioto Co., Northwest Territory (later Ohio), 1800. Appointed Scioto Co. surveyor, 1803. Served as Scioto Co. justice of the peace. Served in Ohio militia, 1804–1812. Served in Ohio House of Representatives, 1808–1809, 1831–1832. Married first Elizabeth Brown, 4 Apr. 1810. Wife died, 1812. Served in War of 1812. Served in Ohio Senate, 1814–1822, 1824–1830. Married second Friendly Ashley Sumner, 7 Mar. 1816. Moved to Piketon, Pike Co., Ohio, ca. 1816, and opened a general store. Joined Methodist church, 1819. Moved to Seal Township, Pike Co., by 1830. Served as chairman of Democratic National Convention, 1832. Served as governor of Ohio, 1832–1836. Appointed first governor of Iowa Territory, 1838. Moved near Iowa City, Johnson Co., Iowa Territory, by 1841. Died at Iowa City.
