Robinson, Rollin
Biography
3 June 1810–18 Feb. 1893. Typesetter, miller, township officer, insurance agent, farmer. Born in Palmyra, Ontario Co., New York. Son of Gain Robinson and Chloe Bradish. Delivered Wayne County Sentinel and learned to set type. Began working as apprentice in Sentinel office, ca. 1827, and assisted in printing first edition of Book of Mormon, ca. 1829–1830. Moved to Palmyra, Lenawee Co., Michigan Territory, Nov. 1832, where he helped build and later operated a saw mill. First constable and tax collector of Palmyra, after its organization in 1834. Married Celestia Ann Corbett, 12 Feb. 1835, in Palmyra. Elected one of the directors of Lenawee County Bank, 1836, in Palmyra. Served as Palmyra town supervisor, 1837–1838. Moved to Buffalo, Erie Co., New York, 1841, where he worked in forwarding and commission business with his brother Erasmus D. Robinson. Returned to Michigan, fall 1842, and worked in grain business at Adrian, Lenawee Co. Agent for Michigan Southern Railroad, 1843–1847, at Adrian. Purchased and operated line of boats on Erie Canal with his brother Erasmus, 1847–1854. Resident of Buffalo, 1850. Moved to Chicago, summer 1854. Worked as insurance agent for Consolidated American Transportation Company, spring 1855–1860, in Chicago. Returned to Palmyra, Lenawee Co., Michigan, by 1860. Palmyra town supervisor, 1864–1865. Served as Palmyra justice of the peace for three terms. Died in Palmyra.
