House of Israel
Summary
Members of the church and the posterity of Jacob, or Israel, in the Old Testament. The people in the Book of Mormon were described in the text as a “remnant of the house of Israel,” descended from the Israelites of the Bible. JS revelations stated that the remnant of the House of Israel would receive the gospel through the gentiles, preceding a more literal gathering of the house of Israel in America. JS also called the “land of America” a “promised land” for “tribes of Indians” descended from Israelites and a land to which “all the tribes of Israel will come.” Those baptized into the church were to be “numbered with the House of Israel.”
