The ordinance organizing the Nauvoo Legion stipulated that the major general was also to be the secretary of the court-martial, adjutant, and inspector general. Later the inspector general became a separate office from the major general and James Arlington Bennet was chosen as inspector general, with the note that in his absence, the major general would act as the inspector general.
