Nauvoo Police, 16 May–28 June 1844
The
following chart identifies the members of the police force in , Illinois, during
the period covered by this volume. In December 1843, the Nauvoo City
Council authorized the creation of a police force to protect JS and other residents from internal and external
threats. Although the police were “dismissed
from Regular duty by the Mayor” in January 1844, members of the police
force were occasionally called out as needed. For example, in May two
policemen guarded for fifteen days and in
June members of the police force participated in the destruction of the
Nauvoo Expositor. This list of policemen was compiled by , the force’s first captain or high
policeman.
