Defence.
. His Station in 4th Compy 1st Regt, Horse was making a very Severe Charge, & went briskly upon the Artillery, a Call to rush on, Gent on white Horse rode up & called to retreat, & heard it not less than 3 times, charged Spiritedly, & was close on the Artillery busily engaged when he rec[eive]d the Blow, the Horsemen had turned about a rod, & was rather behind, the Shout to rush on came from where was, Witness was in 2nd Cohort of the Infantry. was on the Line, Artillery used what Weapons they had to keep the Horse off. .— Piece discharged abt. 50 feet from the Horse, Were obliged to prick the Horses to keep them off, & they wd come up again two or 3 times, we had to touch them with the Swords to keep them off us, as they seemed to urge to be upon us.—
.— Had agreed with that Men were not to come in Contact with each other, lest injury might be done, heard the orders to retreat when about at the distance agreed upon,— but thought they did not attend to the order upon the right.—
. Post was on extreme right <Left>, was with very much difficulty we cd keep them off us, wishing to ride in upon the Guns,— made Charges two or 3 times, after Order given to retreat, [p. [4]]
