Hyrum Smith was called as “assistant for the Bishop” in Kirtland, 10 February 1832. He was appointed an assistant president in the presidency of the high priesthood—and therefore in the presidency of the church—on 6 December 1834. In the period during which this journal entry was made, the presidency of the church were also the presidency of the Kirtland high council. Reference to them as the presidency of the high council at Kirtland, when specifying the presidency of the church might seem to have been more appropriate, suggests that the terminology may have been in transition. See, for example, the reference to Oliver Cowdery later in this same entry and the 16 January 1836 reference to censure of the Twelve by “the presidency of the high council in Kirtland.” (Hyrum Smith, Diary, 10 Feb. 1832; JS History, 1834–1836, 20; JS, Journal, 16 Jan. 1836.)

The text of this hymn was written by William W. Phelps, a member of the Missouri presidency in attendance at this council. (Hymn 18, Collection of Sacred Hymns [1835], 24–25.)

JS ordained Oliver Cowdery “assistant President of the High and Holy Priesthood, . . . to assist in presiding over the whole church” a year earlier. (Entry for 5 Dec. 1834, in JS History, 1834–1836, 17.)

Johnson, an original member of the Quorum of the Twelve, was ordained an apostle eleven months earlier. (Minute Book 1, 14 Feb. 1835.)

Sylvester Smith was ordained a president of the Quorum of the Seventy more than ten months earlier. Minutes of the council clarify that Packard replaced not Sylvester Smith but Hyrum Smith, who was called to the Kirtland high council on 24 September 1834 to replace Sylvester Smith, who had been dropped from the council at that day’s meeting. (JS History, vol. B-1, 578; Minute Book 1, 24 Sept. 1834 and 13 Jan. 1836.)
