JS’s apparent absence from Sunday’s worship services may be attributed to limitations of meeting space. Oliver Cowdery recorded that he did not attend the meeting this day “in consequence of there not being sufficient room for so many in the small houses occupied for meetings.” Caroline Barnes Crosby later observed that the seating in the schoolhouse during these months was so limited that church members “decided on taking their turns in staying away, as the weather was cold, and it was unpleasant for those who stood outside.” (Cowdery, Diary, 6 Mar. 1836; Caroline Barnes Crosby, Autobiography.)
