Irving, formerly a Scottish Presbyterian minister, had recently helped to found the Catholic Apostolic Church. Like JS, Irving anticipated an imminent advent and emphasized both the ecclesiastical offices and the spiritual gifts of the primitive church.a The Catholic Apostolic Church had sent an envoy to Latter-day Saint church leaders in Kirtland several months earlier, but he had never returned to Great Britain.b Later, an editorial in the church newspaper in Nauvoo under JS’s editorship stated that Irving and his followers “counterfeited the truth perhaps the nearest of any of our modern sectarians.”c Irving authored a number of eschatological works, such as The Last Days (London: R. B. Seeley and W. Burnside, 1828) and The Signs of the Times (London: Ellerton and Henderson, [1829]).d
