This serialized history drew on the journals herein beginning with the 4 July 1855 issue of the Deseret News and with the 3 January 1857 issue of the LDS Millennial Star.
The labels on the spines of the four volumes read respectively as follows: “Joseph Smith’s Journal—1842–3 by Willard Richards” (book 1); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843” (book 2); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843–4” (book 3); and “W. Richards’ Journal 1844 Vol. 4” (book 4). Richards kept JS’s journal in the front of book 4, and after JS’s death Richards kept his own journal in the back of the volume.

The case against Fuller, who had been charged with operating a boat at the ferry crossing where JS owned the ferry privileges, was adjourned to 24 May 1843, when it ended in a nonsuit. (JS, Journal, 24 May 1843.)
Phelps’s statement, which was published in the Times and Seasons as a letter to the editor from JS, contends that the word Mormon is not derived from the Greek word mormo, as some people had reportedly postulated, since the plates from which JS translated the Book of Mormon were inscribed in Reformed Egyptian rather than in Greek. Suggesting that “the word Mormon stands independent of the learning and wisdom of this generation” and that mon means good in Egyptian, Phelps concluded that “with the addition of more, or the contraction, mor, we have the word MORMON; which means, literally, more good.” (“Correspondence,” Times and Seasons, 15 May 1843, 4:194, italics in original.)
