Saturday June 1st. At home; some gentle showers. At one P M, I rode out with and ; called on at the boat; paid $9000.; paid <met> , and paid him $5000.; then went to ’s, and paid him and another brother $20000.; then went to [blank] and exchanged $10000. in gold for a check; drank a glass of beer at ; called at ’s while & called at the ’s new house; returned home at 4½ P. M. At 8 P. M, , John Saunders, and Jacob Peart, called at ’ to consult about a coal bed on ; I suggested that it would be profitable to employ the “Maid of Iowa” in the business of carrying the coal &c, and all approved of this plan.

I received the following letter:— “ May 9th. (see file) ”
And replied <To which I [illegible] the following reply <I replied as follows>> as foll “ (see File) Joseph Smith.”

Sunday 2nd.— At home; pleasant day.
Rode out on the hill about 9 A. M. ¶ Municipal Court sat; I was not present; the appealed cases of , , , & came up; but as they failed to appear, the cases were referred back to the <courts> lower <below> [p. 53]
