made no effort to get here before them— did not try to tell the people here, as I supposed they knew all about it— judged it from the line <letter> sent to <the troops> four miles from here— heard supposed the Carthage Grays were concerned in the plot— heard it talked of the night before— judged that the Carthage Grays knew about it from this letter— I went immediately to the Jail when I came into — where I first went I stood in front of the jail <Stood> about South— Saw a guard there— they were inside of the inclosure— dont know how long the troops stayed after they came there until they left again— it was something like 15 minutes— but cannot tell— The troops had a scuffle with the guard when they came up— they clinched the guard— saw them holding two of them— believes the guard fired— I was in front of the Jail— I did not go inside of the enclosure at all. a person could not get into the jail without first going into the enclosure— it is eight or ten feet from the <front of the> jail to the enclosure— I Stood about the middle of the Street— I was as far and near <from> the enclosure as the fence is from the jail— I went up to the corner of the fence— was as far then from the jail as when in the middle of the Street— I Saw oneor two of the troops who were wounded— think I Saw three— did not see more than three who were wounded— I had seen one of them named [John] Wills two or three times [p. 29]
