I made them no reply <to their offer >, but wheeled around and went off— I gave them to understand that I would not take <accept> it— we met— they hailed me— and after I passed them I stopped <turned round> and kept my eye upon them— one of them took a handfull of silver out of his pocket and showed it to me— They met me near <He held it in his right hand.> I was coming from Marry’s Cooper’s Shop under the hill when they met me— I told it the Same day, <to> [blank] [Pierce] and to Mr. Haywood the same week— I did not ask these men who they were, or where they came from— or what their names were— never looked to see which way they went— <I> whieled around and did not look after them— I joined the Mormon Church not a great while before the last court <at this place—>— Thinks he has seen that man before (<pointing to> Mr. Mellon [John D. Mellen])— Dont recollect that I ever said that Mellon was one of the men who made the offer <of the money> to me— I think I said that one of them was about the size of Mellon in describing him— Dont know that I did or did not state to <Thomas English> that I wrote a book, and expected to make a great sum <of money> out of it— or that <I told him> I joined the Mormons for the purpose of making a speculation out of it— The light I spoke of was like lightning— I have not followed my trade since I went to — have [p. 35]
