took the manuscript to the Quincy Herald office, I went with him “If I was going to tell the story off the facts as set forth in the book are as nigh as I could tell them”— I authorised the advertisement <to be> put in the Nauvoo Neighbor— (here insert it)
I told I wanted him to put a piece in, that the pamphlets were there for sale— I did not See the advertisement until it was published— I ordered the advertisement, but he put worded it to suit himself—
the facts I stated to — the Composition is his— there is some mistake about the light as I have already explained— we started from time enough to get to the Rail Road by noon— It was pretty early in the morning that <when> these 20 men were detailed to come to to Commit the murder— these 20 men started before we did— we went soon after— Saw the man riding on a white horse to stop the 20 men— heard the men talking about it— that was the reason they called for volunteers at the Rail road— they <had> sent for the 20 men to stop. Dont know who went off on the white horse— cant say whether or not he returned to the rail road crossing— I think the 20 men [p. 25]
