I dont know how it reads in the pamphlet— I gave it to as he stated it there— It is pretty <much> the same as I told it to — <and> as printed in the pamphlet (here insert it) I presume this statement <is correct— I told it> to right after the murder— I <also> might <made> an affidavit concerning it—)

I recollect seeing , but did not recollect seeing him until you brought up this circumstance— I now recollect seeing him 5. or 6 miles from here, <at a house> where we got some milk— I did not come alone to — several came in with me— I went alone to the jail— two of the men who came along went into a house above here—
we said nothing about this matter as we came along— the troops permitted me to come quietly to — <they> took no steps to Stop me, or to put me under guard— did not march out with them when volunteers were called for at the rail road— had no gun after I left the rail road— put my gun in the wagon— dont know whether any of— them knew whether I was opposed to the murder of the troops Smiths or not— I said coming along if the Augusta Troops were there, they murder would not take place— [p. 28]
