the troops started from in the morning we marched to the crossing of the R R— Desbanding <​orders​> were read there by — made a speach to them do not recollect of any other Person making a speach but . I cannot recollect all of it— said spoke of the necessaty of getting shut of the Mormons he spoke of the Necessity of killing the Smiths wantd them to march through wanted the troops to come to wanted to come with his Company said he would not do it— told them if they wanted to go to when they had started for he would go with them— said he would go home and they called him a damnd coward said they would never elect him Capt again— I do not recollect that I heard say anything then about coming to — do not recollect hearing say any thing about— Grover said if no other person would go alone & started off— I came within 4 miles of with them— There was a call made at the rail road for volunteers to kill the Smiths this was 10 or 12 miles from — we were there at R R about Noon some of the men carried their arms some put them in the baggage Waggons— some were on horseback some on foot & on horsback— G on foot [p.
