I was here on the day Smith was killed untill after dinner I was called upon by Dr. [Thomas L.] Barnes to go to the Country and went about four miles north of the road Dr Barnes was capt of the raingers— I saw no person untill I saw a son of of A[ugusta] going in a lope to I did not meet meet the company who killed Jo Smith none of our company left and went to another place we were gon 3 or 4 hours and did get back untill after Jo Smith was killed aft I met & going to to take the news about 3 miles from here— I saw persons coming from towards I was 3 miles from the persons— [p.
