<he> caugh him G [William Grover] and struck him twice in the face— G said he was the first man in the house 1/2 mile from here & caught up with us— I heard none of Defts but G Say any thing about it— [John] Wills was in the wagon at time G spoke of it Willes was wounded in the Arm Vorus [William Voras] in the shoulder & Gallaher in the face I did not know that they had any other object in view untill one of the Carthage grays brought us a letter and then Burton told me they were going to take the Smiths to and hand hang— When the troops from Jail met us they were on a run. two of the young Chittendens turned the baggage Wagg back I went to that night got there about 12 when I Got there some of the men had got in and some were Coming— There were a good many persons about Warsaw House some 20 or 30 I did not go in did not see either of Defts afterwards— do not know Key do know Gregg I saw him coming out & he was the first that brought the news to me [3 words illegible] hear either <of> Defts say any [3 words illegible] Car Grays knowing all [3 words illegible]t R R I was near [p.
